I am a jazz guitarist in Northern California. My first reaction as a teenager to hearing Duke Ellington’s music was lukewarm. I liked it, but thought it sounded dated. Repeated listenings changed my mind, and I realized the music had a depth that made it timeless. In the early 1970’s, I heard Duke Ellington and his orchestra perform in Berkeley. Around 1989, I was able to play for several months with former Ellington drummer Dave Black. My association with this fantastic musician gave me some great insight into Ellington as both a composer and a bandleader. With my new trio, the Ellington Project, my love and respect for the music continue to grow. |
